Phil McCune believes that people haven’t seen “the real Ella Burger.”
If Tuesday’s season opener against Romeo was just a preview of what’s to come from the Dakota senior guard, then everyone else might want to take notice.
Burger scored a game-high 22 points in the Cougars’ 65-49 basketball victory.
Most of that point total came in the first half. At halftime, she had 16 points to the Bulldogs’ 14 as a team.
“She’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached at Dakota,” McCune said. “I’ve been excited to see this. I knew she was going to have a great game.”
Injuries have been her only obstacles in her playing career at Dakota. Burger missed several games during last year’s pandemic-shortened season after she tore every ligament in her ankle.
Coupled with a knee injury that sidelined then-junior Tamia Tounsel, the Cougars went an uncharacteristic 4-12 last year.
“(We are) coming back with a lot of unfinished business,” Burger said.
Dakota (1-0) jumped out to a 19-0 lead to start the game and Burger finished the first quarter with 11 points.
“We have scorers everywhere,” McCune said. “We shared the ball and got everybody involved.”
Senior Hannah Toutant added 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks for the Cougars. Samone Andrews chipped in with 10 points. Tounsel scored 10 and had seven rebounds in her first game back from her injury.
Burger, who also had five assists and five steals, finished three points shy of her career high of 25.
“We started off the season exactly the way we wanted to,” Burger said. “If we continue to play the way we did today, no one can stop us.”
Bila Matina led Romeo with 15 points against Dakota.Sophomore Bila Matina scored 15 points for Romeo in her varsity debut.
“From playing JV to varsity, the game is a lot faster. It was tough at first, but then the jitters were out and I started playing my game,” Matina said.
Dakota hosts Berkley on Friday. Romeo is scheduled to host Oxford on Monday. Prior to the game, a moment of silence was observed for the victims of Tuesday’s shooting at Oxford High School that killed three students and injured eight others.
